It is rightfully said that ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating'. The Scaling and Validation programme is aimed at providing a stable e-Science Proof-of-Concept environment (the PoC) that supports the applications, and subsequently at closing the feedback loop with the software developers. The PoC infrastructure consists of a wide variety of resources and access points, including large computer clusters and storage space in near-line tape storage, all accessible via grid and data management tools. Also contained in the PoC are various other application services such as databases and, of course, local user interface systems.
The stability of the PoC is maintained for the benefit of the applications. Rigorous software engineering and testing are implemented on a dedicated ‘certification test-bed', where the release candidates for the next version of the PoC are evaluated. Release to the PoC at large is scheduled at fixed regular intervals.
Regular tutorials and workshops are organised to spread knowledge on the infrastructure and to let developers and users become acquainted with new technological developments.Partners
